Virgin Active has redefined the fitness landscape with the launch of its world-first Social Wellness Club at Westfield Bondi Junction. More than just a gym, this innovative concept combines exercise, recovery, and social connection within one integrated space, setting a new benchmark for wellness in Australia.
A New Vision for Wellness
Virgin Active’s vision was to create a destination where members could not only train, but also recharge, relax, and connect. The result is a holistic facility that offers far more than traditional gym experiences. Alongside a large open gym floor, the Bondi Westfield site features a Reformer Pilates Tower studio, community-based Lift Club class, spa-style amenities, cold plunge pool, saunas, and co-working zones. A fully integrated café further enhances its lifestyle appeal, making it a space where health and community intersect.
As Virgin Active noted at launch, the Bondi Westfield club was designed as a space to “exercise, socialise, and recharge all under one roof” – a wellness hub that reflects the evolving needs of members who increasingly see health as a balance of body, mind, and connection.
Delivering the Concept: Girvan Group’s Role
Bringing this ambitious vision to life fell to Girvan Group, who partnered with Virgin Active, Quattro Design Architects, DSA Consulting, and TSA Riley. Constructing such a complex facility within one of Australia’s busiest Westfield shopping centres was no small feat.
Girvan’s team navigated the challenges of a live retail environment, managing limited access while delivering intricate works such as pools and saunas within an existing tenancy. The project required meticulous coordination and detailed planning to ensure safety, minimise disruption, and maintain uncompromising quality.
The team remediated the existing slab to create a seamless gym floor, implemented advanced Building Management Systems (BMS) for smart control of lighting, HVAC, heaters, and chillers to optimise energy efficiency, and coordinated client-direct trades to achieve a smooth transition to public use. Throughout the project, Girvan also applied careful Value Engineering (VE) strategies, optimising materials, finishes, and systems to maintain premium quality while enhancing efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
High-End Finishes with a Lifestyle Focus
Reflecting Virgin Active’s premium brand identity, Girvan ensured a modern aesthetic and luxury finishes throughout. From polished stone and timber detailing to precision installation of wellness facilities, every element was considered to create a welcoming, elevated atmosphere.
The result is a space that doesn’t just meet Virgin Active’s design brief – it enhances it. By blending luxury fitout with functional durability, Girvan helped establish a benchmark facility that elevates the fitness experience into a lifestyle destination.
Collaboration and Outcome
The success of Virgin Active Bondi Westfield was the product of strong collaboration between Virgin Active, TSA and Girvan. “The Girvan Project Management Team was approachable throughout the project and was there from the start,” Virgin Active noted. “A tight program was achieved whilst not compromising on quality.”
This project demonstrates how a clear vision, paired with skilled fitout delivery, can transform a concept into a tangible, world-class environment. This world-first social wellness club is than a fitness centre – it’s a statement about the future of wellness in Australia.
Setting a New Standard
The Bondi project has already been described in the media as a “world-first” and a “game-changer” in how people approach health and wellbeing. With its balance of training, recovery, and social connection, it signals a new era in fitout projects that combine lifestyle, design, and innovation.
For Girvan Group, the project reinforces its reputation for delivering complex builds in challenging environments without compromise. For Virgin Active, it’s the realisation of a bold vision to reimagine wellness. Together, they have created a space that is as inspiring as it is functional – one that sets the standard for future wellness spaces across Australia.
